    Ingredients you need

Recipe ingredients individually arranged on a black background.

    Ingredient notes and substitutions

Orange ~ You can use seedless naval oranges (Cara Cara oranges are our favorite!) or easy-peel clementines. You can squeeze the juice from the fruit, but most times I just peel the oranges and throw the whole thing in the blender. This way you get to enjoy the benefits of all the healthy fiber which juice doesn’t have.

In a pinch, you can use bottled 100% orange juice, but it won’t be as flavorful or fresh tasting.

Banana ~ Bananas add sweetness and a creamy texture to smoothie.

The riper the banana, the sweeter it will be. Smoothies are a perfect place to use up any brown spotty bananas you have.

Milk ~ Any plain, unsweetened non-dairy milk will work here. I typically use almond milk or oat milk, but soy milk, cashew milk, or light coconut milk will all work.

For an extra thick smoothie, try using vegan yogurt instead. Either plain or vanilla variety.

Cashews ~ Raw cashews have a mild, slightly sweet flavor. They blend up creamy and provide protein, calcium, iron, and healthy fats.

For a nut-free option, try using raw oats instead.

Extras ~ A drop of pure vanilla extract would be a lovely addition to this orange banana smoothie.

This smoothie is fairly sweet on its own, but if you really have a sweet tooth, you can add a drizzle of pure maple syrup.

If you want to punch up the protein, add a scoop of vegan vanilla protein powder.

Peel the oranges and remove any seeds.

Add all ingredients to a high-speed blender along with a few ice cubes.

    Blend until smooth and creamy.

    Pro tips and tricks

~ Use seedless naval oranges or clementines. Simply peel and add the whole fruit to the blender.

~ The riper the banana, the sweeter it will be. Brown spotty bananas are perfect for smoothies!

~ Use unsalted raw cashews. Do not use roasted cashews and definitely not salted!

~ Add a few ice cubes to the blender for a cool, frosty finish. You can also use frozen bananas instead of fresh for the same effect.

~ For a nut-free option, use old fashioned rolled oats instead of cashews.

~ If your smoothie is too thin, add another banana or extra nuts.

~ If your smoothie is too thick, add additional non-dairy milk.

    FAQs

Do bananas and oranges go together?

Yes, of course! Bananas and oranges complement each other perfectly. Try this tasty Orange Banana Smoothie to see for yourself!

If you prefer, you can use peaches, mangoes, or pineapples instead of oranges. Try using frozen fruits and skip the ice!

Do you put ice in a smoothie?

If a smoothie calls for frozen fruit, there is no need for ice. If the recipe contains all fresh fruit, like in the case of this dairy-free orange banana smoothie, then I do recommend adding ice. The ice will make it cool and refreshing!
