These Easy Hummus Toast Ideas are like simpler versions of my Veggie Hummus Sandwich. Instead of packing in all the vegetables in one hearty sandwich, choose just one (or two) and pair it with a garnish.
Hummus Toast makes a great breakfast or snack or even a light lunch or dinner. Pair it with soup or salad for a heartier meal.
You could even top crostini with hummus and toppings for an easy party appetizer, just like I do with my Avocado Bruschetta.
The possibilities are endless. Which one will you choose first?
Ingredients you need
Ingredient notes and substitutions
Bread ~ Choose a hearty bread that can stand up to the hummus and toppings. I like Ezekiel sprouted grain breads or Trader Joe’s Super Seed Bread. You could also choose a sourdough bread or even a gluten-free bread.
Toast the bread for a great texture contrast from the creamy hummus.
Hummus ~ I’m partial to my Perfect Oil Free Hummus, but you could use any savory variety. Homemade hummus or store-bought will work.
Other hummus varieties to try
While we are focusing on savory hummus toast ideas in this article, you could do a sweet hummus toast if you want. Try my Sweet Pumpkin Hummus with banana slices, toasted pecans, and a sprinkle of cinnamon!
Veggies ~ There are so many options for veggies. Cucumbers, carrots, radishes, tomatoes, leafy greens (arugula, fresh spinach, baby kale, etc.), bell peppers, jalapeño peppers, corn, red onion, green onion, avocado, mushrooms, etc.
Raw is quickest, but if you have time and prefer to sauté or roast the veggies, go for it.
Crunch ~ Nuts or seeds add a nice crunch. Walnuts, almonds, pecans, hemp seeds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, etc. I usually just throw them on raw, but you can toast them for a deeper flavor if you prefer.
Extras ~ Finish off any of these toast variations with fresh cracked black pepper, pickled red onions, microgreens, red pepper flakes, a dash of hot sauce or sriracha, chopped fresh herbs (like parsley, dill, or cilantro), everything bagel seasoning, a drizzle of balsamic vinegar (or lemon juice or lime juice), or a sprinkle of nutritional yeast.

Topping ideas
Anything you think sounds good will likely work. Here are some of our favorite hummus toast combinations.
- Cucumber, red onion, pumpkin seeds, fresh dill
- Arugula, tomato slices, fresh basil
- Carrot ribbons, walnuts, fresh thyme (I love this combo using leftover roasted rainbow carrots! I slice the carrots in to coins and toast the walnuts. The BEST!)
For a different take, try one of these spreads instead of hummus: vegan ricotta, sun-dried tomato spread, pumpkin seed pesto, or veggie cream cheese.
Storage
Hummus toast is best eaten immediately. I recommend only prepping the ingredients you will eat right away.
Leftover ingredients should all be stored separately.

FAQs
A sturdy, hearty bread is best for this toast recipe. You want something that will stand up to the creamy hummus and all the toppings. I like a sprouted whole grain variety, but a gluten-free bread will also work.
Of course! Hummus provides protein, fiber, healthy fats, and many vitamins and minerals. [source] Paired with whole grain bread and vegetables, like in this hummus toast recipe, it’s a filling, nutritious breakfast to start your day.
I like to use a basic hummus recipe for making this vegan breakfast toast so the flavors don’t compete with the veggies and toppings. However, you can use whatever savory variety of hummus you like best. Roasted red pepper hummus, sun dried tomato hummus, garlic hummus, lemon herb hummus, etc. will all work.
